Thompson wins 2010 STPGA Senior Professional Championship

Robert Thompson fired a 36-hole total of 69-67—136, 8 under par for the course at The Hills Country Club’s Jack Nicklaus Signature Course, to win the 2010 Southern Texas PGA Senior Professional Championship going away.

Thompson won the STPGA Professional Championship five times and is a three-time STPGA Player of the Year award winner; the victory in the STPGA’s Senior Professional Championship is his first and marked the second time he’s found the winner’s circle in Southern Texas PGA competition this year— Thompson won the Senior Division of the 2010 Club Car Memorial Championship earlier in August.

He sealed the deal for victory in the Section championship when, sitting at 6-under-par through 14 holes of the second and final round of the tournament, he scored an eagle 2 on the course’s par-4 15th hole. The eagle was his second of the tournament— he took only two strokes on the par-4 13th hole in the first round.

Thompson won $250 as victor of the tournament’s overall competition, and another $850 as the winner of the event’s Senior Division. Troy Schleicher, Steve Parker and Larry Degenhart followed in second through fourth place, respectively in both groups. Schleicher went 68-72—140 to take runner-up money of $550 in the 50-59 Division, while Parker tallied a 71-70—141 total for third place winnings of $400.

Degenhart won $350 for his fourth place finish at 72-70—142. Philip Miranda finished in fifth place, winning $300 for his score of 74-71—145.

David Lundstrom, the STPGA’s 2009 Senior Player of the Year, won the tournament’s 60-69 Division and $600 with a score of 76-78—154. Marty Fleckman trailed Lundstrom by 2 strokes, weighing in at 80-76—156 for runner-up winnings of $400.

Chuck Cook and Steve Veriato tied for third place, finishing 2 strokes back of Fleckman at 158. Cook posted rounds of 81 and 77 for his share of the tie; Veriato went 78-80 and both took home $250.

David Findlay took the top spot in the 70-and-Over Division with a score of 83-83—166, good for $250 in winnings. Alvin Odom and Sonny Rhodes, finishing at 84-88—172 and 82-90—172, respectively, finished in a second place tie and won $100 each.

The tournament also served as a qualifying event for the 2010 PGA Senior Professional Championship; eight Southern Texas PGA Professionals earned spots in the national championship,  which will take place Oct. 7-10 at Toscana Country Club in Indian Wells, Calif.

Thompson, Schleicher, Parker, Degenhart and Miranda are all advancing to the national tournament, as are: Ken McDonald, who finished sixth in the STPGA Senior Professional Championship at 73-75—148; Jeff Hunter, defending champion of the Section event and the seventh-place finisher third year (75-74—149); and Jim Dickson, who finished at 76-74—150 for eight place.

The first through third alternates into the national event are, in order, Chuck Westergard (ninth place), Gordon Johnson (10th place) and Jeff Cooper (11th place).
