Schroeder takes top spot in Senior Series tournament

Schroeder edges out Narveson at Cypresswood

When you’re hot, you’re hot. Montgomery’s Ron Schroeder, fresh off a second-place finish in an early August Bridgestone Golf STPGA Senior Series tournament at Eagle Pointe Golf Club, closed out the month with a win.
Schroeder shot a 36-hole total of 7-under-par 67-70—137 to win the Senior Division and overall competition of a Senior Series tournament on the Tradition Course at Cypresswood Golf Club.

Schroeder edged out Simonton’s Dave Narveson in both groups— Narveson finished at 71-67—138 for runner-up honors in both groups. Narveson didn’t go down without a fight, however, scoring birdies on the 12th and 15th through 18th holes in the second round. Fortunately for Schroeder, he took birdies on three of the same six holes to preserve the win.

As a result, he took home the $300 prize for winning the overall battle and $420 for taking the Senior Division. Narveson won $360 in Senior Division second-place money.

Huntsville’s Robert Thompson finished in third place and won $360 for his score of 73-67—140.

Spring’s Mike Ray tallied a 70-75—145 total for fourth place and $330 in winnings, followed by Steve Parker of Houston in fifth place at 75-72—147, good for a $300 check.

Frank Conner of San Antonio won the tournament’s Super Senior Division and $520 with a score of 69-70—139.

Steve Veriato of San Marcos and Wayne Wright of Fort Worth tied for second place in the Super Senior group and won $370 each. Veriato went 75-71—146 for his share of the runner-up spot; Wright went 74-72—146.

The Woodlands’ Jim Dickson and Sherwood Stewart shared fourth place at 73-74—147 and 72-75—147, respectively. Both earned $305.

Marty Fleckman of Cypress won $430 for topping the tournament’s Veteran Division with a score of 75-76—151. The win was Fleckman’s second on the Senior Series this year.

He was followed in second place by Jim Gittleman of San Antonio, who posted a 76-78—154 total for winnings of $250. Kingwood’s Ben Graves went 78-78—156 for third place and a $170 check.
