HORSESHOE BAY, TX
-- Thirty-six holes of golf were not enough to decide a champion at the 2018 Effex Management Solutions Texas Team Championship presented by E-Z-Go, adidas, Bushnell, and Morell Studios, as a sudden-death playoff was necessary to crown this year’s champions. Patrick Buhrmann and Ben Kern (Georgetown Country Club) made birdie on the first playoff hole to defeat Jarrett Almond and Rufus Brijalba (The Hills Country Club) and capture the trophy.
Escondido Golf and Lake Club, as well as Horseshoe Bay Resort - Summit Rock Course hosted the annual two-person best ball event on Monday, July 9 and Tuesday, July 10, where players from both the Northern Texas and Southern Texas PGA Sections participated. A total score of 125 (-18) following rounds of 63 (-8) at Escondido in Round One, and 62 (-10) at Summit Rock in Round Two earned Buhrmann and Kern their place in the playoff, where they made sure to take advantage.
“Each course has its positives and keeps you on your toes,” Kern said. “Last year was my first year and unfortunately lost in a playoff to the exact shot Patrick hit. I was nice to come out on top this year.”
Kern will represent Georgetown Country Club and the Southern Texas PGA at the PGA Championship at Bellerive Country Club in St. Louis next month. He qualified for the Championship after finishing tied ninth at the PGA Professional Championship in June in Seaside, California.
“It’s kind of neat to win this tournament,” Buhrmann said. “Ben just got his boots on the ground and he is excited to represent Georgetown Country Club and the Southern Texas PGA at the PGA Championship next month. He was a thoroughbred this week and all I had to do was watch him play and enjoy the ride.”
After Round One, PGA Professionals enjoyed interacting with Section Partners at the highly contested putting contest at Whitewater Putting Course. Keith Harris and David Studebaker (Cross Timbers GC) walked away with the honors, followed by the team of Patrick Buhrmann and Ben Kern (Georgetown CC) and Bo Branyan and Douglas Myer (Emerald Bay Club).
Thank you to Effex Management Solutions, adidas, Bushnell, E-Z-Go, and Morrell Studios for sponsoring this annual event as well as Brandon Dixon, PGA Director of Golf at Escondido Golf and Lake Club, and Dell Wood, PGA Head Golf Professional at Horseshoe Bay Resort – Summit Rock Course, and each of their staffs for their hospitality.
