May 28th, 2020

HOUSTON, TEXAS—Carlos Sainz Jr., Teaching Professional at GolfTEC – Upper Kirby, has claimed the National Car Rental Southern Texas Assistant PGA Professional Championship for the second year in a row on May 27-28 at Golf Club of Houston-Tournament Course. Sainz Jr. who had previously earned his exemption into the 44th National Car Rental Assistant PGA Professional Championship, will lead three additional Section PGA Professionals to compete in the national tournament on November 12-15.

“It’s an honor to win the Section Assistant PGA Professional Championship two years in a row,” said Sainz Jr. “I struggled on the greens the last couple of days, but I was able to play aggressively and tackle the short holes to make a bunch of birdies.”
The national Championship, supported by Srixon, Cleveland Golf, XXIO, Asics and John Deere will be held at PGA Golf Club, Port St. Lucie, Fla.

Sainz Jr. turned in a winning total of 11-under-par 133 to capture the National Car Rental Southern Texas Assistant PGA Professional Championship. Tye Grissom, Assistant Professional at The Hills Country Club and Justin Engel, PGA Assistant Professional at Shadow Hawk Golf Club finished 5 strokes back at 138 (-6). They are joined by Jeff Litwak, PGA Assistant Professional at Lochinvar Golf Club who secured the third qualifying spot through a 12-hole playoff against Cody Price, Teaching Professional at Cyrstal Falls Golf Club.

The National Car Rental Assistant PGA Professional Championship brings together a field of 132 contestants representing the PGA of America’s 41 nationwide Sections and features a total purse of $150,000. All rounds will be played on the Wanamaker Course. A cut after 36 holes of play to the low 70 scorers and ties will be made.
Begun in 1977, the National Car Rental Assistant PGA Professional Championship is modeled after the PGA Professional Championship, with a field of PGA Professionals and PGA Associates who advanced through 41 Section Championships conducted from May through October this year.

If eligibility is met and maintained, the champion earns a berth in the 54th PGA Professional Championship to be conducted April 25-28, 2021, at PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Florida.
