SAN ANTONIO, TX ---
The Southern Texas PGA wins the 2nd Levy Cup Matches presented by Cutter & Buck and Sun Mountain by an overall point total of 10.5 to 7.5. Despite losing the first three matches, STPGA rallied back to win six out of the remaining nine Matches. Billy Sitton (Triumph Golf LLC.) bested John Shelley (Golf Academy of America) in Match 10 to clinch the Cup for the STPGA team. His 2&1 victory gave STPGA the nine points needed to repeat.
“I am thrilled to win the Cup,” said STPGA Co-Captain David Pilsner. “It was an honor to serve with Ryan Briggs and be a part of such a great event. I’m glad we are keeping the trophy here where it belongs.”
Co-Captain Ryan Briggs echoed Pilsner on the win. “I was excited when the STPGA Board selected me to Co-Captain with David this year, but am more excited now that we get to keep the Cup in South Texas.”
The Levy Cup Matches is an annual competition between the Northern Texas PGA and the Southern Texas PGA Sections. The Ryder Cup-style format featured teams represented by six Assistant PGA Professionals and six Senior PGA Professionals (any classification, age 50 and older) who qualified through their respective Section Major Championships. The event was started in 2017 to honor Paul Levy, who is currently the President of The PGA of America.
Jim Stalder, PGA Life Member, and Shane Pearce, PGA Assistant Professional at Hurricane Creek Country Club, served as Co-Captains for the NTPGA Team. The STPGA Co-Captains were David Pilsner, PGA Director of Instruction at Timber Creek Golf Club, and Ryan Briggs, PGA Assistant Professional at Whispering Pines Golf Club.
Day one of the Levy Cup Matches was shortened due to inclement weather in the San Antonio area. The morning began with a 15-minute delay and then play was suspended at 1:08 p.m. due to a rain and lightning in the area. Due to limited daylight and the forecast for Tuesday, the Committee and Captains made the decision to complete the Four-Ball Matches in the afternoon after play resumed at 4:17 p.m., and cancel the Foursome Matches. Play resumed with Singles Matches on Tuesday morning.
Due to the omission of the Foursome Matches, only 18 points were available at the Second Annual Levy Cup Matches. With the shortening of the Matches, the Southern Texas PGA needed 9 points to retain the Cup, while the Northern Texas PGA needed 9.5 to capture the Cup. The Matches were contested at Briggs Ranch Golf Club, a 7,155-yards, par 72-layout in San Antonio.
