Robert Thompson, the defending champion, leads the 2018 Southern Texas Senior PGA Professional Championship supported by Golf Advisor and John Deere after the first round. Thompson, a PGA Teaching Professional at Whispering Pines Golf Club, shot a 5-under par 67, recording zero bogeys and five birdies to top the leaderboard by 3 strokes over Darrell Fuston, PGA Director of Golf at The Woodlands Country Club, Olle Karlstrom, PGA Head Professional at Walden on Lake Houston, and Mike Kullberg, PGA Head Professional at Sterling Country Club at Houston National.
Forty PGA Professionals are attempting to qualify for the 30th
Senior PGA Professional Championship supported by Golf Advisor and John Deere. The top six players will represent the Southern Texas PGA on October 25-28, 2018 at PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Florida. Karlstrom, Fuston, Kullberg, Troy Schleicher (The Woodlands Country Club – Palmer Course), Tim Hobby (The Club at Sonterra), and Billy Sitton (Triumph Golf LLC) lead the list of those in contention after Round One.
Along with the six representatives, Thompson and Omar Uresti have earned spots into the 2018 Championship due to winning the 2010 Championship at Toscana Country Club in Indian Wells, California and the 2017 PGA Professional Championship at Sunriver Resort in Sunriver, Oregon, respectively.
The 2018 Southern Texas Senior PGA Professional Championship supported by Golf Advisor and John Deere is a 36-hole stroke play event being contested at The Golf Trails of The Woodlands-Oaks Course, a 6,684-yard, par 72 course located in The Woodlands, Texas.
