Boros Crowned Energy Transfer Texas Senior Open Champion

Southern Texas PGA • October 21, 2022

MONT BELVIEU, TEXAS (October 21, 2022) - Guy Boros of Plantation, FL claimed the Championship title at the 26th Energy Transfer Texas Senior Open presented by S & B, Vortech Contracting, and the City of Mont Belvieu with rounds of 70-65-69 for a 54-hole score of 204 out lasting Steve Gilley of Aubrey, TX in a one hole sudden death playoff.

Boros is a former PGA TOUR winner and son of World Golf Hall of Fame member and 3-time major Champion Julius Boros. This is his second State Senior Open title of the year after winning the Colorado Senior Open earlier this year.

“We had a really good field here so this is quite an accomplishment,” said Boros. “The weather and golf course were absolutely fantastic this week and I can’t thank the sponsors and staff enough for running this tournament very well.”

Heading into the final day, Boros held a two stroke lead after shooting an impressive 65 (-6) during Round Two. Steve Gilley came from behind on the back nine during the final round with 3 birdies and an impressive chip in eagle on Hole 17 to card a final round 65 (-6).

“The greens were awesome,” said Gilley who was playing in his first Energy Transfer Texas Senior Open. “The back nine was special today and just couldn’t pull through in the playoff.”

Boros and Gilley played the difficult par-4 18th for the sudden death playoff. Both players found difficult spots off the tee with Boros able to 2-putt from 20 feet to win the Championship.

“I felt pretty confident going into the playoff after making birdie on Hole 17 and par on Hole 18,” said Boros. “My partner and I both had a tough time on the playoff hole but I am glad I pulled it off.”

The event features a 36-hole cut with the top-30 and ties making it to the final round. The 36-hole cut took place at two-over-par with 32 players making it.

The 26th Energy Transfer Texas Senior Open was contested at Eagle Pointe Golf Club, a 6,740-yard par 71 course in Mont Belvieu, Texas. This is the ninth year in a row Eagle Pointe has hosted this prestigious event.

The Energy Transfer Texas Senior Open also had a Super Senior Division that played 36-holes over the first two days.  This year’s event saw Robert Thompson, PGA Teaching Professional at Whispering Pines Golf Club capture the Super Senior Division title after finishing with a total of 144 (+2).

“This feels really great,” said Thompson. “I had no idea coming down the stretch where I stood and I just kept trying to make pars. I was fortunate to birdie Hole 17 and make par on Hole 18 and that ended up going a long way.”

Following Round One of the Super Senior Division, Marshall Gavre of Fairfield, IA led the field by three strokes with a score of 69 (-2). Thompson, who was in third place after the first day, was able to bounce back with three birdies during Round Two and earn his first win at the Energy Transfer Texas Senior Open.

Low Amateur honors were also awarded on Thursday. Michael Harwood of Leander, TX and Chad Branton of Cartersville, GA won this award by shooting 146 (+4) in the over 36 holes.

A field of 120 players from 24 different states and two countries competed for the two division titles. Due to its high entry demand, the Energy Transfer Texas Senior Open had a priority entry process this year and will continue to do that moving forward to ensure the event remains the best in the country. This year’s event featured the largest overall purse money in the country at $91,000.

Prior to the start of the championship, Eagle Pointe Golf Club played host to the Energy Transfer Texas Senior Open Pro-Am with 105 participants. This Pro-Am raised $30,000 for local scholarship through PGA REACH Southern Texas and the Energy Transfer Scholarship Fund. PGA REACH is a 501(c)3 organization with the mission of impacting lives through golf. Founded in 1994, the foundation has numerous programs through its junior golf initiatives, scholarships, military programs, and employment opportunities.

The 21 teams of 4 Amateurs and one Professional played a fun shamble format where each hole the team counted one gross and one net score. The winning team shot 121 (-21) and featured players from Barbers Hill Education Foundation. The team included Clint Pipes, Fred Skinner, George Barrera, Dustin Morris, and Joe Summerhays, PGA Director of Instruction at Eagle Lake Golf Course in Syracuse, UT.

This year’s Pro-Am featured support from 15 different companies and organizations within the local community. Thank you to all our Pro-Am partners that supported the event!

The Southern Texas PGA would also like to extend a thank you to Energy Transfer for their title sponsorship and S & B, Vortech Contracting and the City of Mont Belvieu for being the presenting sponsors. The 27th Energy Transfer Texas Senior Open will take place back at Eagle Pointe on October 18th – 20th, 2022.

Revenue Milestone: We surpassed $8.7 million in revenue for 2025, marking a 55% increase since 2021. National Standing: The STPGA is now the 3rd largest operation out of the 41 PGA Sections—a remarkable feat considering we rank 11th in total membership. It has been several years since this foundational document was updated, and these pillars will now serve as the compass for all annual planning and goal setting.

During the Orientation, all attendees must satisfy the requirements below to receive credit for attendance: · Join the Google Meet within five (5) minutes of the scheduled start time · Have their camera on for the entirety of the presentation · Introduce themselves during the introduction portion of the Orientation PGA of America Level 1 Associates must complete this orientation prior to participating in any Southern Texas PGA Tournament or Social Function starting in 2026. We wanted to start to make you aware of this now so that you are prepared come 2026. The STPGA will be having at least 2 of these orientations in March for any Level 1 Associate already in the program and has not advanced to Level 2, so that you can still participate in all events in 2026!
