DeSive and Gathright Lead 2020 STPGA Award Winners

Southern Texas PGA • November 16, 2020

SPRING, TEXAS The Southern Texas PGA is excited to announce this year’s Section and Chapter Award Winners. Doug DeSive, who is set to finish his term as President of the Southern Texas PGA in February 2021, has won the 2020 STPGA Golf Professional of the Year, the highest honor within the section. This award is based on the recipient’s overall performance as a PGA Professional, level of service to the Southern Texas PGA, leadership, image, ability to inspire fellow Professionals, and service to the region’s golf community.

DeSive, who was elected to PGA Membership in 1986, is best known for his willingness to grow the game through charitable efforts and his consistent professionalism as the Head Golf Professional at Corpus Christi Country Club for close to 30 years. Through programs like Charity Golf Summer and Foundation Pro-Ams, DeSive has raised over $80,000 for PGA Reach Southern Texas, whose mission is to impact lives through golf.

Most recently, DeSive gained even more respect from his peers as he led the association through the COVID-19 pandemic as President of the STPGA. He ensured communication lines were open between PGA Professionals, best practices were shared, and constant communication took place around local and state guidelines. He continued to preach to his members the need to create memorable experiences at their facilities and to provide a safe place for guests and members to escape what most people believe to be one of the most challenging years in our country's history.

Bryan Gathright, PGA Director of Instruction at the Clubs of Cordillera Ranch in Boerne, TX won this year’s Harvey Penick Teacher of the Year. Named after legendary PGA Professional and teacher Harvey Penick, this award is given to an individual for overall excellence in golf instruction. In 2020, Gathright’s ability to help his students perform at the highest level was on full display across the state of Texas. His students won the Southern Amateur Championship, the Texas State Open, the Texas State Amateur, and the Texas State Junior Amateur.

Gathright not only helps players of all skill levels progress, but also spends time helping other instructors across the STPGA and the country. Gathright enjoys presenting at events like the STPGA Coaching and Teaching Summit and Junior Golf Summit. He is a proud member of Golf Magazine’s Top 100 Teachers in America for 20 consecutive years and has spent time coaching notable players like Jimmy Walker and Notah Begay III.

DeSive, Gathright, and their other Section award winners will be formally presented with their honors during the STPGA’s 53rd Annual President’s Dinner and Awards Ceremony on Monday, February 15, 2021, at the Omni Houston Galleria. Chapter Award winners will be honored at their respective Chapter Meetings in December 2020. A complete listing of the 2020 Southern Texas PGA award recipients is below:

AUSTIN, TEXAS (August 26) — The 2025 TPx Player’s Cup concluded today at Austin Country Club, where the Section’s top professionals battled across two competitive divisions — Senior and Open — for one of the Southern Texas PGA’s most prestigious titles. In the Senior Division, Steve Jurgensen, PGA Teaching Professional at Westwood Golf Club, delivered a wire-to-wire victory, finishing at 3-under-par for the championship after rounds of 69-72. Jurgensen sealed the win in dramatic fashion, rolling in a birdie on the par-5 18th to close out his championship run. Reflecting on the victory, Jurgensen said,

HOUSTON, TEXAS (August 18, 2025) – Mother Nature had different plans at Champions Golf Club, where drawn-out lightning delays ultimately forced the cancellation of Round Two and shortened the 2025 Southern Texas Assistant PGA Professional Championship to 18 holes. Taking advantage of his strong opening round, Jake Sitterle, Assistant Professional at Lakecliff Country Club, earned the victory with a score of 70 (-1) on the par-71 layout, securing his place at this year’s champion. “This wasn’t the way anyone wanted this championship to end. Gilbert was playing great in the second round, but I am happy I could get the win,” Sitterle reflected. “With how the last major ended, I was always confident in my game and that I could be up at the top, but this field is strong, and I just wish all the guys who qualified the best of luck.” The tournament, hosted at Champions Golf Club, featured over 50 Assistant Professionals from across the Section, competing for qualifying spots into the Assistant PGA Professional Championship, set to be played at PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Florida, November 13-16, 2025.

HOUSTON, TX (July 22, 2025) – Omar Uresti, PGA Life Member, claimed victory at the 2025 Southern Texas Senior PGA Professional Championship, firing rounds of 67-73–140 ( -4 ) at Bay Oaks Country Club to secure the title of Senior Section Champion. This is Uresti's Fourth Senior Championship, with his last win coming in 2023. This year’s championship served a dual purpose, determining not only the Southern Texas PGA Senior Champion but also acting as the Section’s qualifier for the 2025 Senior PGA Professional Championship, to be held at PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Florida, later this fall. "It feels good to come out and get a win against a strong field and a tough golf course. The first round I was hitting good shots and making good putts, but today wasn't the same, and I had to balance my mental game a little bit throughout the ups and downs," said Uresti. In the final round, Uresti needed to battle back after a slow start on the front nine with 3 bogeys, but took the lead with 1 eagle and 2 birdies on the back nine to secure the win. The leaderboard finished with Uresti winning by three over Billy Sitton, PGA Executive from Triumph Golf, and four over Darrell Fuston, PGA General Manager from Westwood Golf Club. Heading into the tournament, Uresti, Robert Thompson, PGA, and Eric Bogar, PGA, were already exempt. The five additional qualifiers are: Billy Sitton, PGA Golf Executive at Triumph Golf Darrell Fuston, PGA General Manager at Westwood Golf Club Darek Franklin, PGA Assistant Professional at Austin Golf Club Steve Jurgensen, PGA Teaching Professional at Westwood Golf Club David von Hoffman, PGA Director of Golf at Spanish Oaks Golf Club
