Levy Cup Matches Updates Qualification Guidelines

Southern Texas PGA • February 7, 2022

Matches original intent remains with new eligibility and reach!

Spring, TX – The Southern Texas PGA and Northern Texas PGA Sections are excited to announce an update to the qualification guidelines for the Levy Cup Matches starting in 2022. Established in 2017, the Levy Cup Matches were created to honor Paul Levy, who is a Past President of the PGA of America and former Member of the Southern Texas PGA.

Each Section will be represented by 12 PGA Professionals at the Levy Cup Matches but will now consist of three different categories of representatives, two of which have been involved since the inception of the Matches. The first group of four PGA Professionals will be represented by Members that serve their facilities in an Assistant Golf Professional capacity. The second group of four Professionals will consist of Members that are 50 years of age or older, regardless of classification. The third and final group of PGA Professionals, which is the new category in 2022, are four PGA Members of any classification within the PGA of America that is not already represented in these Matches or the Texas Joe Black Cup Matches.

The addition of this new, third group of PGA Members means that for the first time Teaching Professionals and Directors of Instruction, among other categories, will be able to represent their respective Section in one of the Ryder Cup style events in Texas.

“Our goal was to continue to allow the mentoring between older and younger professionals but add in more PGA Professionals that impact the game in a positive manner,” said Paul Levy, who worked in many different classifications himself throughout his career.

“PGA Professionals throughout Texas work in many different roles and I believe showcasing people who also play the game at a high level is very important.”

Board of Directors from both organizations were involved in this decision and appreciate Paul Levy’s continued involvement and support. This adjustment continues to elevate our professionals and give our professionals a great opportunity to compete for a spot to represent their Section at the end of the year.

The Southern Texas PGA will be using our Player of the Year Points List as well as the Senior Player of the Year Points List to determine these 12 spots. Our first point event will be the Classic Chevy Championship on April 4-5 at Riverbend Country Club in Sugar Land, TX.

The 6th Levy Cup Matches will be played on November 7-8, 2022 at Cimarron Hills Golf & Country Club in Georgetown, TX. The overall record for these Matches stands with the STPGA leading 3-2. The NTPGA currently holds the Cup after winning the 5th Levy Cup Matches in 2021 at River Crest CC in Fort Worth, TX.

AUSTIN, TEXAS (August 26) — The 2025 TPx Player’s Cup concluded today at Austin Country Club, where the Section’s top professionals battled across two competitive divisions — Senior and Open — for one of the Southern Texas PGA’s most prestigious titles. In the Senior Division, Steve Jurgensen, PGA Teaching Professional at Westwood Golf Club, delivered a wire-to-wire victory, finishing at 3-under-par for the championship after rounds of 69-72. Jurgensen sealed the win in dramatic fashion, rolling in a birdie on the par-5 18th to close out his championship run. Reflecting on the victory, Jurgensen said,

HOUSTON, TEXAS (August 18, 2025) – Mother Nature had different plans at Champions Golf Club, where drawn-out lightning delays ultimately forced the cancellation of Round Two and shortened the 2025 Southern Texas Assistant PGA Professional Championship to 18 holes. Taking advantage of his strong opening round, Jake Sitterle, Assistant Professional at Lakecliff Country Club, earned the victory with a score of 70 (-1) on the par-71 layout, securing his place at this year’s champion. “This wasn’t the way anyone wanted this championship to end. Gilbert was playing great in the second round, but I am happy I could get the win,” Sitterle reflected. “With how the last major ended, I was always confident in my game and that I could be up at the top, but this field is strong, and I just wish all the guys who qualified the best of luck.” The tournament, hosted at Champions Golf Club, featured over 50 Assistant Professionals from across the Section, competing for qualifying spots into the Assistant PGA Professional Championship, set to be played at PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Florida, November 13-16, 2025.

HOUSTON, TX (July 22, 2025) – Omar Uresti, PGA Life Member, claimed victory at the 2025 Southern Texas Senior PGA Professional Championship, firing rounds of 67-73–140 ( -4 ) at Bay Oaks Country Club to secure the title of Senior Section Champion. This is Uresti's Fourth Senior Championship, with his last win coming in 2023. This year’s championship served a dual purpose, determining not only the Southern Texas PGA Senior Champion but also acting as the Section’s qualifier for the 2025 Senior PGA Professional Championship, to be held at PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Florida, later this fall. "It feels good to come out and get a win against a strong field and a tough golf course. The first round I was hitting good shots and making good putts, but today wasn't the same, and I had to balance my mental game a little bit throughout the ups and downs," said Uresti. In the final round, Uresti needed to battle back after a slow start on the front nine with 3 bogeys, but took the lead with 1 eagle and 2 birdies on the back nine to secure the win. The leaderboard finished with Uresti winning by three over Billy Sitton, PGA Executive from Triumph Golf, and four over Darrell Fuston, PGA General Manager from Westwood Golf Club. Heading into the tournament, Uresti, Robert Thompson, PGA, and Eric Bogar, PGA, were already exempt. The five additional qualifiers are: Billy Sitton, PGA Golf Executive at Triumph Golf Darrell Fuston, PGA General Manager at Westwood Golf Club Darek Franklin, PGA Assistant Professional at Austin Golf Club Steve Jurgensen, PGA Teaching Professional at Westwood Golf Club David von Hoffman, PGA Director of Golf at Spanish Oaks Golf Club
