STPGA Q1 UPDATE
Strategic Plan, Mentoring, and More

Dear STPGA Members,

As we conclude the first quarter, I'm writing to share some key updates. Our newly appointed Board of Directors convened for our inaugural meeting in late March. I'm genuinely enthusiastic about collaborating with this dedicated group of PGA of America Members to strengthen our Association and prioritize your needs.

During this meeting, we outlined strategic goals for the next two years, and I'm excited to highlight a few initiatives:

Strategic Plan Refresh
We will commence a strategic plan review during our July board meeting, culminating in a revised plan presentation at the 2026 STPGA Education Summit and Annual Meeting.

Associate Development & Mentoring
The STPGA will launch an Associate Mentoring Program, aligning with a PGA initiative from the National Membership Committee. We are grateful that Board Member, Trent Peddy, PGA, will lead this important initiative.

Enhanced Chapter Connectivity
I've requested Chapter Officers to host at least one annual engagement event. I'm pleased to report that planning is already underway.

Thank you to everyone who expressed Committee interest after the Annual Meeting. Committee assignments are now finalized and Available Here. Your input is valued, so please connect with Committee Members and chairs with any comments or suggestions.

Additionally, we have three member-focused initiatives occurring within the next 30-90 days:

Annual Member Audit
To ensure accurate records, vital for effective communication and Member service, we are conducting our annual Member Audit. This audit verifies accurate Member classification, information, and facility details. While Members are responsible for maintaining accurate employment records, the STPGA believes this process enhances our service.

Please verify your information on PGA.org.

For classification questions, please contact Executive Director, Thomas Hutton, PGA.

Facility Data Verification
The PGA of America is working on updating its internal facility data tracking and has tasked the Sections through the Strategic Funding initiative to assist with this process. Having accurate facility information will enable our Career Consultants and Sections to better serve PGA of America Members and Associates throughout the year.

Please Click Here for a 3-5 minute survey that will assist our Section with updating our full database. This will be a top priority of the Southern Texas PGA for the remainder of 2025 with the goal of 100% data verification, so please ensure that you complete this form.

PDR (Professional Development Requirement) Cycle Reminder
With the PDR cycle ending on June 15, 2025, please ensure you meet the requirements. For information on additional PDR credit opportunities, please visit the
STPGA education page.

Thank you for your continued engagement and support.

Sincerely,

Dr. Rich Ballinger, PGA

AUSTIN, TEXAS (August 26) — The 2025 TPx Player’s Cup concluded today at Austin Country Club, where the Section’s top professionals battled across two competitive divisions — Senior and Open — for one of the Southern Texas PGA’s most prestigious titles. In the Senior Division, Steve Jurgensen, PGA Teaching Professional at Westwood Golf Club, delivered a wire-to-wire victory, finishing at 3-under-par for the championship after rounds of 69-72. Jurgensen sealed the win in dramatic fashion, rolling in a birdie on the par-5 18th to close out his championship run. Reflecting on the victory, Jurgensen said,

HOUSTON, TEXAS (August 18, 2025) – Mother Nature had different plans at Champions Golf Club, where drawn-out lightning delays ultimately forced the cancellation of Round Two and shortened the 2025 Southern Texas Assistant PGA Professional Championship to 18 holes. Taking advantage of his strong opening round, Jake Sitterle, Assistant Professional at Lakecliff Country Club, earned the victory with a score of 70 (-1) on the par-71 layout, securing his place at this year’s champion. “This wasn’t the way anyone wanted this championship to end. Gilbert was playing great in the second round, but I am happy I could get the win,” Sitterle reflected. “With how the last major ended, I was always confident in my game and that I could be up at the top, but this field is strong, and I just wish all the guys who qualified the best of luck.” The tournament, hosted at Champions Golf Club, featured over 50 Assistant Professionals from across the Section, competing for qualifying spots into the Assistant PGA Professional Championship, set to be played at PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Florida, November 13-16, 2025.

HOUSTON, TX (July 22, 2025) – Omar Uresti, PGA Life Member, claimed victory at the 2025 Southern Texas Senior PGA Professional Championship, firing rounds of 67-73–140 ( -4 ) at Bay Oaks Country Club to secure the title of Senior Section Champion. This is Uresti's Fourth Senior Championship, with his last win coming in 2023. This year’s championship served a dual purpose, determining not only the Southern Texas PGA Senior Champion but also acting as the Section’s qualifier for the 2025 Senior PGA Professional Championship, to be held at PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Florida, later this fall. "It feels good to come out and get a win against a strong field and a tough golf course. The first round I was hitting good shots and making good putts, but today wasn't the same, and I had to balance my mental game a little bit throughout the ups and downs," said Uresti. In the final round, Uresti needed to battle back after a slow start on the front nine with 3 bogeys, but took the lead with 1 eagle and 2 birdies on the back nine to secure the win. The leaderboard finished with Uresti winning by three over Billy Sitton, PGA Executive from Triumph Golf, and four over Darrell Fuston, PGA General Manager from Westwood Golf Club. Heading into the tournament, Uresti, Robert Thompson, PGA, and Eric Bogar, PGA, were already exempt. The five additional qualifiers are: Billy Sitton, PGA Golf Executive at Triumph Golf Darrell Fuston, PGA General Manager at Westwood Golf Club Darek Franklin, PGA Assistant Professional at Austin Golf Club Steve Jurgensen, PGA Teaching Professional at Westwood Golf Club David von Hoffman, PGA Director of Golf at Spanish Oaks Golf Club
