Ray and Buckman Get Inducted Into Texas Golf Hall of Fame

Evan Starr • May 23, 2024

In partnership with the Texas Golf Hall of Fame and its founding members, the Southern Texas PGA would like to congratulate PGA of America Members Brent Buckman and Mike Ray for being inducted into the Texas Golf Hall of Fame. Both will be showcased at the induction dinner held on Monday, October 21 at Houston Country Club.

Brent Buckman, who has been a PGA of America Member for over 40 years, is best known for his tremendous impact on the golfing community in Austin. From work with the George Hannon Association to working at facilities like Onion Creek, Barton Creek, Spanish Oaks, and now Driftwood Golf and Ranch Club, Brent always has a smile on his face and always wants to grow the sport he loves.

“This means more to me than anyone could imagine,” said Buckman who has helped raise over $600,000 for college scholarships through the George Hannon Association. “The phone call was such a surprise, and I will never forget that moment.”

Throughout his career as a PGA of America Member, Buckman always understood the importance of mentoring and teaching the next generation. He is proud to have seen over 20 PGA of America Members work for him and then go on to have their own success within the golf industry. Buckman is being inducted into the Golf Professional/Teacher Category.

PGA of America Member Mike Ray is being inducted into a new category that was created this year called Professional Service. Ray served as Executive Director for the Southern Texas PGA for 30 years and currently works for the PGA of America helping Sections and Members across the country.

Ray’s impact starts with establishing STPGA’s independent business operation and growing from a $100,000 annual budget to a $4M budget when he left in 2017. He created the STPGA Scholarship Program, acquired tax exempt 501(c)3 status with the creation of the STPGA Foundation, and was the biggest proponent of junior golf.

“There is no other state like Texas when it comes to golf,” said Ray, who has been a PGA of America Member for 38 years. “We have so many unbelievable Golf Professionals in Texas and it was an honor to work on their behalf for so many years and continue to do that today.”

One of Ray’s biggest accomplishments was the work he put in around the Texas Junior Golf Alliance. It was Ray’s idea to create one membership for juniors to play either STPGA or NTPGA Junior Golf along with receiving a free membership to the Legends Junior Tour. This model continues to thrive today with close to 100 2-Day Championships in Texas for the best junior golfers.

“We are so excited not only for Brent and Mike, but for the entire 2024 Class of the Texas Golf Hall of Fame,” said Thomas Hutton, Executive Director for the STPGA. “The Hall of Fame brings all of the key stakeholders together to showcase golf at the highest level and I encourage everyone to visit the digital museum that the Hall of Fame has created.”

AUSTIN, TEXAS (August 26) — The 2025 TPx Player’s Cup concluded today at Austin Country Club, where the Section’s top professionals battled across two competitive divisions — Senior and Open — for one of the Southern Texas PGA’s most prestigious titles. In the Senior Division, Steve Jurgensen, PGA Teaching Professional at Westwood Golf Club, delivered a wire-to-wire victory, finishing at 3-under-par for the championship after rounds of 69-72. Jurgensen sealed the win in dramatic fashion, rolling in a birdie on the par-5 18th to close out his championship run. Reflecting on the victory, Jurgensen said,

HOUSTON, TEXAS (August 18, 2025) – Mother Nature had different plans at Champions Golf Club, where drawn-out lightning delays ultimately forced the cancellation of Round Two and shortened the 2025 Southern Texas Assistant PGA Professional Championship to 18 holes. Taking advantage of his strong opening round, Jake Sitterle, Assistant Professional at Lakecliff Country Club, earned the victory with a score of 70 (-1) on the par-71 layout, securing his place at this year’s champion. “This wasn’t the way anyone wanted this championship to end. Gilbert was playing great in the second round, but I am happy I could get the win,” Sitterle reflected. “With how the last major ended, I was always confident in my game and that I could be up at the top, but this field is strong, and I just wish all the guys who qualified the best of luck.” The tournament, hosted at Champions Golf Club, featured over 50 Assistant Professionals from across the Section, competing for qualifying spots into the Assistant PGA Professional Championship, set to be played at PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Florida, November 13-16, 2025.

HOUSTON, TX (July 22, 2025) – Omar Uresti, PGA Life Member, claimed victory at the 2025 Southern Texas Senior PGA Professional Championship, firing rounds of 67-73–140 ( -4 ) at Bay Oaks Country Club to secure the title of Senior Section Champion. This is Uresti's Fourth Senior Championship, with his last win coming in 2023. This year’s championship served a dual purpose, determining not only the Southern Texas PGA Senior Champion but also acting as the Section’s qualifier for the 2025 Senior PGA Professional Championship, to be held at PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Florida, later this fall. "It feels good to come out and get a win against a strong field and a tough golf course. The first round I was hitting good shots and making good putts, but today wasn't the same, and I had to balance my mental game a little bit throughout the ups and downs," said Uresti. In the final round, Uresti needed to battle back after a slow start on the front nine with 3 bogeys, but took the lead with 1 eagle and 2 birdies on the back nine to secure the win. The leaderboard finished with Uresti winning by three over Billy Sitton, PGA Executive from Triumph Golf, and four over Darrell Fuston, PGA General Manager from Westwood Golf Club. Heading into the tournament, Uresti, Robert Thompson, PGA, and Eric Bogar, PGA, were already exempt. The five additional qualifiers are: Billy Sitton, PGA Golf Executive at Triumph Golf Darrell Fuston, PGA General Manager at Westwood Golf Club Darek Franklin, PGA Assistant Professional at Austin Golf Club Steve Jurgensen, PGA Teaching Professional at Westwood Golf Club David von Hoffman, PGA Director of Golf at Spanish Oaks Golf Club
