STPGA and Susie Redman, PGA Win National Awards!

Southern Texas PGA • January 25, 2023

SPRING, TX (January 25, 2023) - The PGA of America announced the 2023 class of National Award winners today, and the Southern Texas PGA is honored to be recognized as the 2023 Herb Graffis Award recipient.

The Herb Graffis Award is designed to recognize a PGA of America Section for extraordinary and exemplary contributions and achievements in the area of Player Development. This award considers local initiatives designed to grow the game, impact the next generation, and involve Section PGA Professionals and the STPGA is honored to receive this award.

The Southern Texas PGA, led by President James Brown, PGA and Executive Director Thomas Hutton, PGA, has seen the importance of growing junior golf since the Section Foundation’s inception in 1994. Now, the STPGA has an established player pathway on how to become a lifelong golfer. All STPGA programming is designed to drive revenue and exposure to STPGA Professionals and their facilities. Junior Golf programming provides a minimum of a $14 million economic impact each year towards golf in Southern Texas, with over 4,000 juniors taking part in the STPGA Junior Golf program.

The Section prides itself on the fact that a junior can start off with a lesson from a PGA Professional and work their way up to a 36-hole Championship with college coaches watching, utilizing the STPGA Junior Golf Journey.

In partnership with PGA of America programs, the STPGA is also proud that 29 STPGA Junior Golfers have made it to the Drive, Chip and Putt Finals since the program started, 1,400 juniors participated in PGA Jr. League in 2022, and 300 Veterans went through PGA HOPE programs last year.

Along with earning the Herb Graffis Award, the Southern Texas PGA is excited to announce Susie Redman, PGA Teaching Professional at The Woodlands Country Club as the 2023 PGA Youth Player Development Award winner!

The PGA Youth Player Development Award bestows special recognition on a PGA Professional who has displayed extraordinary and exemplary contribution and achievement in the area of Youth Player Development. All 41 Sections that make up the PGA of America nominate deserving winners from across the country for this award and the STPGA is extremely proud that one of our own won this award.

Susie spends her days working to grow the game among junior golfers and lives by her philosophy to “make a difference, one youth, one swing at a time.” As a proud PGA Class A Member for 23 years and Life Member of the LPGA for 38 years, Susie understands the importance of Youth Player Development and always aims to bring fun, enthusiasm, knowledge, and diversity to the sport.

Excelling in the area of Youth Player Development requires a Professional to lead by example and Susie does this through her self-described leadership style as a servant leader. As a Youth Player Development coach, Susie has direct contact with many people from children, parents, other coaches, PGA Professionals, and more, and her goal is to impact everyone in a positive and transformational way.

On a personal and professional level, Susie has taken the holistic “kaizen” approach of continuous improvement. This approach has led her to an impressive continuing education resume centered on girls and women in golf, coaching, and the American Development Model (ADM) through which she earned her ADM PGA Coach Certification in 2019.

The Southern Texas PGA is excited to congratulate Susie Redman as the 2023 National PGA Youth Player Development Award recipient. Susie and the Southern Texas PGA will be honored throughout the year in various ways with the culmination happening at the PGA of America Awards Banquet on November 7, 2023 at PGA Frisco in Frisco, TX.

The STPGA wants to thank all the parents, juniors, volunteers, staff members, and PGA Professionals for supporting junior golf and our STPGA programs. It is only fitting that both a PGA Professional and the entire Section get recognized together for growing this great game in Southern Texas!

We wanted to start to make you aware of this now so that you are prepared come 2026. The STPGA will be having at least 2 of these orientations in March for any Level 1 Associate already in the program and has not advanced to Level 2, so that you can still participate in all events in 2026! Please note: This policy begins with the Pro-Pro Champ in March. For any event in January and February, Level 1 Associates can participate without attending an orientation, as our first orientation isn't until March. Click here for the full outline of the program, view all eleven dates that an orientation will be hosted, and the landing page with more information accessible to you. HOUSTON, TEXAS (November 18, 2025) – The historic 45th Joe Black Cup has concluded, and we proudly congratulate Team NTPGA on securing the victory at BraeBurn Country Club with a final score of 15.5–8.5 over Team STPGA. Team NTPGA established early momentum during Day One, delivering an impressive performance in the Four-Ball and Foursomes matches, where they earned 9.5 points to build a commanding lead. Their strong play continued into the Singles matches, where they successfully held off a determined rally from Team STPGA. Throughout Tuesday’s competition, spectators were treated to a dynamic and engaging battle, with the leaderboard frequently shifting between red and blue as both teams exchanged critical points to tie the session 6-6. This year’s event was elevated by a truly memorable “Evening of Honor,” during which we welcomed and celebrated 29 Past Captains. Their presence underscored the tradition, legacy, and camaraderie that define the Texas Joe Black Cup Matches. The evening served as a powerful reminder of the event’s rich history and the influential leaders who have helped shape its enduring significance. We extend heartfelt congratulations to Team NTPGA for their outstanding performance and to both teams for exemplifying sportsmanship, competitive spirit, and pride in their respective sections. The 45th Joe Black Cup will long be remembered as a fitting tribute to the heritage of golf in Texas, Mr. Joe Black, and the individuals who continue to elevate the game. After 45 years of competition, the Northern Texas PGA now holds a 22–21–2 lead over the Southern Texas PGA in the storied history of the Joe Black Cup Matches. The 46th playing will return to Midland Country Club on November 16–17, 2026, where Team STPGA will look to reclaim the cup and bring it back to Southern Texas. A special thank you to Club Car, Srixon, Cleveland Golf, Peter Millar, and Winston Collection for their outstanding partnership and support in creating a world-class atmosphere befitting this historic 45th edition of the Matches. SPRING, TX (November 5, 2025) – After falling heartbreakingly short one year ago, Team Southern Texas PGA returned to the Levy Cup Matches with one mission: to bring the Cup home. And in one of the most dramatic finishes in event history, they did just that, defeating Team Northern Texas PGA by a single point at Gleneagles Country Club in Plano, Texas. The 9th playing of the Levy Cup Matches, held November 3–4, featured twelve PGA Professionals from each Section competing across Four-Ball, Foursomes, and Singles Matches in a spirited Ryder Cup–style format.
