STPGA Wins the Joe Black Cup Matches

Southern Texas PGA • November 16, 2021

FREDERICKSBURG, TEXAS – The 41st Texas Joe Black Cup Matches went down to the final match today at Boot Ranch Golf Club. Team STPGA was down 7 to 5 heading into today’s singles matches and mounted a comeback to claim the matches 12.5 to 11.5. Darrell Fuston, in the anchor match, made par on 17 to win his match 2 and 1 over John Sikes.

“These guys really pulled it out today. So how does it feel? It feels awesome!” said Rick Arnett, STPGA Captain. “I am a winning captain, and I am just honored and thankful to be here.”

During the Monday morning Four-Ball matches, STPGA was in a great position to take the lead. But in a turn of events with the final two matches, Cameron Doan and John Sikes won the last two holes of their match against Casey Russell and Joe Mitchell Jr. to tie the match. Dean Larsson and Shane Pierce won the last hole of their match to finish 1 up against Ryan Polzin and James Brown, leaving the morning session tied 3 to 3.

In the afternoon Foursomes matches, NTPGA won the session 4 to 2. NTPGA got off to a fast start, winning their first two matches, led by Thomas Devanna and Brett Beaty beating Darrell Fuston and Chad Donegan, as well as Greg Gregory and Joshua Havard beating Jason Alexander and Trent Peddy. Each match finished 5 and 4 in NTPGA’s favor, giving the NTPGA a 7 to 5 lead after Day 1.

During Tuesdays Singles Matches, STPGA won 7.5 to 4.5 to complete the comeback. The STPGA won three out of the last four matches to take back the cup, led by Trent Peddy, Matt Cain, and Darrell Fuston.

On Sunday, during the Opening Ceremonies, Katie Manor, the new Executive Director for the Texas Golf Hall of Fame, was onsite and made an exciting announcement. The announcement revolved around the creation of the first ever Texas Golf Hall of Fame Scholarship. The NTPGA and STPGA graciously agreed to enhance their partnership with the Hall by funding an annual scholarship to be named after Mr. Joe Black, in recognition of all he has done in our state for golf, and for his efforts to bring the Hall of Fame to where it is today.

The unique part of this announcement was that the winning side of the Matches secures the scholarship for their Foundation. After winning the Cup, the Southern Texas PGA will award the first ever Texas Golf Hall of Fame Joe Black Scholarship in 2022.

"This unique partnership is just another way that the game of golf will honor one of its greats, but also impact the life of a young adult as they pursue their education," said Katie Manor. "The Hall of Fame looks to create more of these memorable opportunities with our golfing legends in Texas!"

Heading into the 41st playing, the overall team records sat level at 19-19-2, with the Northern Texas PGA holding the trophy from last year’s win. The Texas Joe Black Cup Matches is an annual competition between the Southern Texas PGA and the Northern Texas PGA Sections. The Ryder Cup-style format featured 12 golf professionals from each Section. The event started in 1981 to honor Joe Black, a Snyder, Texas native who was completing his first year as President of The PGA of America.

The teams from each Section were represented by their Section President, the top playing PGA Directors of Golf, PGA Head Professionals and PGA General Managers, and a Captain’s Pick. Rick Arnett, PGA Head Professional at Great Hills Country Club, was Captain of the Southern Texas PGA team, and Ronny Glanton, PGA Head Professional at Sherrill Park Golf Course, served as the Northern Texas PGA Captain.

Boot Ranch Golf Club was an unbelievable host in Fredericksburg, TX. The 7,154-yards, par-71 layout was in perfect condition and great hosts. The STPGA and NTPGA would like to thank our three presenting sponsors of Club Car, Dunning, and Stitch.

The 42nd playing of the Texas Joe Black Cup Matches will be played at Maridoe Golf Club in Carrollton, TX, November 14-16, 2022.

COLUMBUS, TEXAS (May 20, 2026) — The Southern Texas PGA returned to Big Easy Ranch on May 18-19 for the 2026 Omega Transactions Memorial Championship, where shifting weather, difficult scoring conditions, and two strong closing performances defined the championship in Columbus. Round One brought heavy winds across Big Easy Ranch, forcing players to manage ball flight, stay patient, and grind through difficult conditions. Round Two began with light morning rain that delayed tee times, but the weather eventually gave way to a beautiful afternoon as the wind settled and scoring opportunities opened across the course.

BANDON, Oregon (April 29, 2026) ー Jesse Droemer embraced the elements. With the Walter Hagen Cup and a berth into the PGA Championship within reach, Droemer expected Wednesday’s final round of the 2026 PGA Professional Championship to be a test of patience and control. Strong, brisk winds made Bandon Dunes an even greater challenge, but the Southern Texas PGA standout rose to the occasion. Droemer (Houston, Texas) fired a final-round 2-under-par 70 to finish at 4-under-par 283, securing victory by one stroke and earning his place among the game’s elite. “I knew it was going to be windy,” said Droemer, the fifth champion from the Southern Texas PGA Section and the first since 2021. “I knew the conditions were going to be tough, and I just really was trying to embrace the elements. I'm glad it was windy. I'm glad it was playing hard.” A PGA Teaching Professional at Riverbend Country Club, Droemer began his round with five consecutive pars before recording his lone front-nine bogey at the par-3 sixth. He quickly rebounded with his first of four birdies at the par-4 seventh and added another at the par-5 ninth to make the turn at 1-under-par 35. Carrying momentum into the back nine, Droemer birdied the par-4 10th and par-5 13th to strengthen his position atop the leaderboard. A bogey at the par-3 15th briefly tightened the margin, but three steady pars to close sealed the championship victory.

PEARLAND, TX (April 15, 2026) — The Southern Texas PGA Major season opened with drama and momentum at Golfcrest Country Club, where Jesse Droemer, PGA, and Steve Jurgensen, PGA, captured their respective division titles at the 2026 Huntington Bank Spring Classic, held over the last two days. The Open Division delivered a thrilling finish as Jesse Droemer, PGA Teaching Professional at Riverbend Country Club, secured the championship at 6-under-par following a playoff against David von Hoffmann, PGA Director of Golf at Spanish Oaks Golf Club. The two competitors replayed the iconic 18th hole to determine the champion after a tightly contested final round, where Droemer carded a steady two-putt par to decide the title. David von Hoffmann began Round Two tied for third before quickly surging into the lead after birdieing three of his first four holes. His early charge applied pressure throughout the round and set the tone for a dramatic finish. Meanwhile, Droemer, who began the day tied for fifth, battled through adversity after an early setback with a double bogey on Hole #7 before mounting a late push when it mattered most. A stretch of birdies on Holes 15, 16, and 17 ignited Droemer’s charge and ultimately forced the playoff showdown on the finishing hole.
