The Clubs of Kingwood (Island Course) to Host First Major of 2019
SPRING, TX – The Clubs of Kingwood (Island Course) will play host to the first Major Tournament of the year, the Match Play Championship, on February 11-13. This event marks the first major STPGA tournament that The Clubs of Kingwood (Island Course), a 7,253-yard, par 72 layout, has hosted since Hurricane Harvey wreaked havoc on the Houston area in 2017.
“I am extremely excited to have my peers come play at the Club,” PGA Director of Golf Steve Hatch said. “We have been kind of void over the last year and a half because of Hurricane Harvey, so I know the membership is excited and ready for the Section to come out. I’ve met with my MGA, WGA, Ladies 9-Holers, and they are all excited. It’s a great facility because they appreciate golf and they all want to be involved and it’s pretty exciting for them which makes it even better.”
On Day One of the three-day event, all players will play a stroke play qualifying round to determine the 32-players that will make up the Open Division. The next 16 players will form a separate match play bracket playing a one-and-done format for a separate purse. The top 16 Seniors in stroke play qualifying round will make up the Senior Division of the match play bracket for the Championship.
In last year’s event, Axis Golf Academy’s Ben Willman defeated Dylan Newman (Wildcat Golf Club) 2Up to win the first tournament of the season at Cimarron Hills Golf & Country Club. In the Senior Division, Tim Hobby, the 2018 Senior Player of the Year, topped Edwin Dickens (Vaaler Creek Golf Club) 7&6 to win his first ever Senior Championship.
