Willman Crowned Champion at Tradition Championship
BRYAN, TEXAS – Ben Willman, PGA Teaching Professional at Axis Golf Academy, recorded a one-under-par 71 in the final round to finish the 2019 Tradition Championship with a final score of 143 (-1).
“I hit a couple of loose shots today, but I putted well all week,” said Willman. “I’m quite happy with my solid play. I just queued in on one of my old swing thoughts of getting the club back in front of me.”
This marks the third time Willman has been crowned champion of the Tradition Championship. He won this event in 2012 at Boot Ranch Golf Club as well as in 2016 at Oaks Hills Country Club.
The Tradition Championship included a Senior Division that was comprised of 15 participants aged 50 or older who competed for a separate purse and played at modified yardage. Ricky Arnett, PGA Head Professional at Great Hills Country Club, had a two-day total 145 to finish the Championship at one-over-par.
“The score I posted for two days is pretty respectable, but the course played really difficult,” said Arnett. “I didn’t hit it great, I just hit in play. I had some good bounces and a couple of three-putts. Bottom line, I just got lucky.”
This marks Arnett’s second major tournament win in 2019. He won the Spring Classic at The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch in May.
Billy Sitton, PGA Golf Executive at Triumph Golf LLC, and Carl Baker, PGA Life Member, recorded two-day totals of 146 (+2) and 147 (+3), respectively, to round out the top-3.
This 36-hole event was the fourth of five individual stroke-play events that comprise the OMEGA Player of the Year Points List. The Tradition Championship featured a field of 86 Southern Texas PGA Members and Associates competing at Traditions Club, a 7,146-yard Nicklaus course, in Bryan, Texas.
The Tradition Championship was presented by Club Car, Cutter & Buck, Devant Sports Towels, L.A.B Golf, Sterling Cut Glass, and Turf Hound.
After Round One, L.A.B. Golf hosted a hole-in-one contest on the practice green. Those who made a hole-in-one were entered into a drawing for $100. Garrison Nordt, PGA Head Professional at Lochinvar Golf Club, took home $100 for sinking the putt.
