Hunsucker Champion of 23rd Lone Star NGL Texas Senior Open

Southern Texas PGA • November 8, 2019

The Championship was contested as a 36-hole competition due to inclement weather.

MONT BELVIEU, TX—Chris Hunsucker of San Antonio, Texas claimed the Championship title at the 23rd Lone Star NGL Texas Senior Open presented by S & B Engineers and Constructors and Vortech Contracting with rounds of 64-67 for a final 36-hole score of 131 (-11).

“Unfortunately, the weather got us again this year, but as far as my play goes, I was very happy. I hit the ball well, struck it well, and putted well,” said Hunsucker. “When you shoot 11 under for two rounds, you’ve done a lot of good things. I hit it pretty straight, hit a lot of greens, and made some putts.”

Hunsucker led the Senior Division of the Tournament following Wednesday’s Round 1 by two strokes. During Round 2 he started on the #10 tee and came out strong with birdies on holes #10 and #11. Hunsucker went on to add three additional birdies and an eagle on the way to his victory.

David Morland IV of Palm Coast, Florida and Robert Thompson, PGA Teaching Professional at Whispering Pines Golf Club tied for second at the Championship shooting a 36-hole total of 136 (-6).

Low Amateur honors were also awarded today at the Senior Open. Sean Reed of Tulare, California finished tied for 28th place, shooting 146 (+4) in the 36-hole Championship earning him the Low Amateur recognition.

Play during Round 2 of the Lone Star NGL Texas Senior Open was suspended Thursday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. due to inclement weather in the area. At 3:00 p.m., the Committee decided that play would be suspended until 10:00 a.m. Friday morning and that the Championship would be contested as a 36-hole competition.

The 23rd Lone Star NGL Texas Senior Open was contested at Eagle Pointe Golf Club, a 6,740-yard part 71 course in Mont Belvieu, Texas. This is the sixth year in a row Eagle Pointe has hosted this prestigious event.

HOUSTON, TEXAS (August 18, 2025) – Mother Nature had different plans at Champions Golf Club, where drawn-out lightning delays ultimately forced the cancellation of Round Two and shortened the 2025 Southern Texas Assistant PGA Professional Championship to 18 holes. Taking advantage of his strong opening round, Jake Sitterle, Assistant Professional at Lakecliff Country Club, earned the victory with a score of 70 (-1) on the par-71 layout, securing his place at this year’s champion. “This wasn’t the way anyone wanted this championship to end. Gilbert was playing great in the second round, but I am happy I could get the win,” Sitterle reflected. “With how the last major ended, I was always confident in my game and that I could be up at the top, but this field is strong, and I just wish all the guys who qualified the best of luck.” The tournament, hosted at Champions Golf Club, featured over 50 Assistant Professionals from across the Section, competing for qualifying spots into the Assistant PGA Professional Championship, set to be played at PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Florida, November 13-16, 2025.
